NFL clubs might view AFL’s Fevola as a risk: McBriar

THE Dallas Cowboys’ Australian-born punter Mat McBriar, has no doubt Brendan Fevola has ”all the tools” to become an NFL punter, but finding a club prepared to take a chance on damaged goods might be the problem.

While his AFL career appears dead following his recent sacking from the Brisbane Lions, the NFL has been mentioned as a viable alternative for Fevola, with the other two Australians in the league, Sav Rocca (Philadelphia) and Ben Graham (Arizona), both making the successful transition from AFL.

”It is difficult [to make the swap to NFL] but he’s got all the tools. I mean, he’s a brilliant kick,” said McBriar, who was in Sydney yesterday to watch the Swans train.

”I really think he would have a really good chance at making it just because his leg swing is so straight through, and I think that’s huge for a punter. It would be great to see more guys come over, and I wish him all the best if he has a crack at it.”

McBriar was asked how much Fevola’s off-field misdemeanours might deter NFL clubs, or would they not care as long as he could kick.

”Definitely performance is huge, but some teams won’t even look at him because they would look into his background,” McBriar said. ”Other teams, probably it won’t matter as much, it just depends. All teams act differently in that regard. There are American players that Dallas probably wouldn’t go near, and other teams are lining up for their services.”
